At 24 miles long, Pebble Island is the third
largest offshore island in the archipelago. Its diverse terrain
offers vast white sandy beaches, moor land and rocky peaks, an
extensive area of ponds and wetlands and dramatic costal cliffs.
All of these environments provide vital breeding habitats for a
wide ranging population of birds, including some rare species such
as the Black-necked swan.
Thousands of Gentoo, Rockhopper
and Magellanic penguins breed on the Island each summer, topping
the list of some 42 resident bird species.
Off road tours to key sites around the
Island are available, guided by your hosts, who are great wildlife
and history enthusiast. If you prefer to walk, a drop-ff service
is provided.
For military enthusiasts, there are several
reminders of the 1982 conflict when British special forces raided
the island's Argentine occupied airstrip. Not far from the settlement,
a memorial stands for HMS Coventry, looking out to her final resting
place just 10 miles off the coast. |
